In 2022, the main Italian municipalities collected a total of 547 million euros from fines for violations of the Highway Code.

This was calculated by Codacons , in a report based on data delivered by the same local administrations to the Ministry of the Interior.

Based on the dossier, Cagliari ranks 14th in total forfeited by road fines: in 2022 the fines collected amounted to 4,068,963 euros, to which must be added 311,087 euros of high fines for violations recorded by speed cameras . In total, the fines imposed on Cagliari residents last year amounted to almost 4.4 million euros .

Again, the average annual fine per resident amounts to 29.3 euros.

The Italian city that collected the most from road fines in 2022 was Milan (151 million euros), followed by Rome (133 million) and Florence (further away, with 48 million).

At the other end of the ranking are Catanzaro and Aosta, both under one million euros, with respectively 812,000 and 917,000 euros collected from fines.

«The traffic fines – comments the president of Codacons, Carlo Rienzi – are confirmed as a treasure trove for the Italian municipalities, guaranteeing generous income to the coffers of the local authorities. The recovery of car circulation after the period of the pandemic has certainly had an impact on the sharp increase in penalties, but the data show that serious critical issues remain regarding the use of speed cameras".
