As soon as she opened her eyes, Arya caught mother Anna's gaze, but after a few hours she was transferred to the Nuoro hospital. No complications of its conditions, but a compulsory path due to the lack of personnel. In the Lanusei nursery, emergency births are authorized, but the newborns are immediately separated from the mothers who brought them into the world. Without doctors, babies cannot receive first pediatric care and are therefore transferred to other hospitals. In the last few days it has happened on two occasions: the mothers remained hospitalized in the ward and their children were taken to San Francesco di Nuoro. They will meet again only in the next few days, when mothers and children will receive the resignation sheet.
The witness
Anna Simonetti is 33 years old and at dawn yesterday she gave birth to her third child, Arya. The woman, originally from Naples but for some time transplanted to Tortolì for family reasons, arrived by ambulance at Nostra Signora della Mercede in the night between Friday and yesterday. He knew the nursery was closed, but his condition prompted doctors to avoid a transfer aboard the rescue vehicle to another hospital. There was no need to take risks and Anna gave birth in the nursery thanks to the extraordinary work of the staff (reduced to the bone) on duty. At that point, yesterday morning the health management organized the transport of Arya to San Francesco where she was entrusted to the doctors. «It is not nice for a mother to have her little one taken away for absurd reasons. It is not acceptable not to be able to be next to a creature that you have carried in your womb for nine months ». Anna could leave the hospital today and at that point she could reach Nuoro to visit her third daughter. "The mother - says Anna - has every right to experience the beautiful emotion of childbirth and the subsequent moments, she must be reassured and - reiterates the woman - not to see her baby taken away". Mother Anna and little Arya are fine, the work of the specialists of the ward was flawless even in an emergency situation, but it is clear that these are cases outside of any canon of acceptability: the doctors assist emergencies and then they are forced to transfer newborns because there is a lack of continuity of care in Pediatrics. A few days ago the same happened to a woman from Baunei whose baby was transferred to Nuoro.
The doctors
Marco Dei is a gynecologist in service since 2004 at the Lanusei hospital. «We do 90% of the work, that is, follow the woman during pregnancy, but then we do not guarantee the assistance to the birth which is the point of arrival that we do together. Giving birth far away also means a social cost, like getting away from loved ones, which is a very serious fact. From a psychological point of view, separating mother and child after childbirth is devastating, I would say against nature ». On a hypothetical reopening of the nest, only dark clouds gather. Three out of the eight professionals foreseen by the organic plant are not enough to guarantee the service in compliance with the guidelines. The recent agreements stipulated with the Brotzu of Cagliari and the ASL of Sulcis, in addition to the support of doctors from Olbia and Carbonia, plus a freelancer from Oristano, are not enough to keep the department open. "We are working hard, all the operating units have achieved the set objectives but in general there are no doctors: a global reorganization is needed", commented Luigi Ferrai (50), acting general manager.
