The passion for hordes of undead and the fight for survival shows no sign of abating. After eleven seasons of “The Walking Dead” - the show inspired by Robert Kirkman's comics, awarded at the Emmy and nominated for a Golden Globe for best drama series - the spin-off “The Walking Dead: Dead City” continues, which, after the excellent response obtained with the first cycle of episodes, returns to the small screen with a new load of heart-stopping content.

Born as a direct sequel to the original series, “Dead City” debuted in 2023, continuing the adventures of Maggie and Negan , who find themselves in the heart of a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, cut off from the mainland and overrun by wandering zombies. Under the control of the “Croat”, a tyrannical custodian of that ruined place, the two protagonists will be forced to make a high-risk deal: Maggie will be able to hug her son Hershel Jr. only if Negan agrees to surrender to the Lady, putting an end to a pending account that has been dragging on for a long time.

Entrusting the universe of “The Walking Dead” to two of the most beloved characters by fans has given “Dead City” an immediate advantage, allowing it to immediately stand out from the classic side projects. The setting has gained depth thanks to the change of scenery, and a plot has been built around it that is consistent with the narrative past, but capable of avoiding the perception of simple filler. To further clarify the tone and atmosphere of the show, some statements by showrunner Eli Jorne, released on the occasion of the debut of the first episodes, come in handy: «It's The Walking Dead as we've never seen it before. We've never lived in a city like this. It's New York, there are skyscrapers up to the sky and a million and a half walkers. And for characters like Maggie and Negan, who have been running in the woods for a long time, it's just a whole new world, extremely claustrophobic, scary».

Last year, the first official information about “The Walking Dead: Dead City 2” began to circulate: during the San Diego Comic-Con 2024, executive producer Scott Gimple, together with the protagonist duo Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan, revealed that the second season will pick up six months after the events narrated in the previous episodes, and that in particular it will be : «A reset of The Walking Dead for these characters, because all these alliances and balances shift, and people shift, and people find themselves in very different places for reasons that they didn’t expect».

From the first teaser of Season 2, we were able to see Negan again in the company of his inseparable Lucille, the lethal baseball bat that has accompanied him since his first appearances. Happy to be able to take her up again, and hinting at some details that will emerge in the new episodes, Morgan said: «There is something tied to that sweet girl that I love... It makes me turn into Negan. In this season he has a love-hate relationship with her».

The official trailer released last March provides new information about what happened to the two protagonists in New York, after the attempt to free and save Maggie's son. In a brutally violent and action-packed setting, the protagonist will also find herself holding the club of her enemy-friend, preparing for a war between opposing factions that will be difficult to get out of without making sacrifices. In addition to Morgan and Cohan, the cast also includes Gaius Charles, Željko Ivanek, Mahina Anne Marie Napoleon, Lisa Emery, Logan Kim, Dascha Polanco and Kim Coates.

Recently back to talk about the show, Morgan assured that in the new episodes we will see a new Negan, enriched with new and unexpected nuances . Interviewed by Screen Rant, he stated precisely: «With Dead City, I don't know if it will be the last year, but I think we are forming this character who, when we met him, was the worst person in the world. Over time, we discovered another side of him».
