Four "colors" of the saxophone to enhance the compositions of Paolo Coggiola. The Vagues Saxophone Quartet will be performing in the Sala Sassu of the Canepa Conservatory in Sassari on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. for the second of the Ellipsis Association's Spring Concerts.
The quartet is made up of Sassari native Andrea Mocci (soprano saxophone), Francesco Ronzio (alto saxophone), Mattia Quirico (tenor saxophone), and Vincent Dupuy (baritone saxophone). They will perform "Subway Dances," named after Coggiola's composition of the same name and part of the evening's program. The piece explores the often inseparable connection between sound and movement that has characterized various instrumental and vocal works from ancient times to modern times.
Other pieces will also be performed: Edvard Grieg's Holberg Suite, Op. 40, a Carmen fantasy based on music by Georges Bizet, Claudio Sanna's 5 Miniatures, Bela Bartok's Romanian Dances, A Manega's Dance & Groove, and Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.
Vagues is a modular saxophone ensemble that transcends the traditional canons of a quartet thanks to the versatility of its members, all multi-instrumentalists. It debuted 10 years ago at the Milano Musica Festival and has since participated in numerous festivals and events in Italy and abroad, performing in prestigious venues and constantly expanding its repertoire.
