Every race tackled, every training session, every kilometer in any climatic condition is marked by an authentic, pure and unshakable passion for running: Francesco Mei, extended middle-distance runner of the Olbia Academy, dominated the cross-country running season on the island this year ringing together four consecutive successes among which the Absolute Sardinian title stands out on the 3 km short cross.

His is the story of a young boy who grew up on the tartan from an early age: coached by his father Gianni (ex esteemed athlete) he shares his efforts and dreams with his older brother Salvatore - with whom they have often shown off remarkable stubbornness - and with the younger sisters Virginia and the little girl of the house Maria still Cadetta. The presence of his mother Licia Asara is inevitable, also with a past as a respectable middle-distance runner.

Just look him in the eyes to understand his philosophy: little talk, self-denial, sacrifices and courage just like his idol Steve Prefontaine who at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich enchanted everyone with his crazy, yet magical, competition tactics .

Mei, yours has been total domination this season of the Festival del Cross.

«This first phase of the season certainly went very well, four victories are a good calling card. But I didn't expect it, certainly the sensations were good but I was aiming to win a race, I never imagined winning even four».

Have you introduced any innovations in your preparation?

«No, more or less the workouts have remained the same: we have slightly increased the weekly mileage but it has remained more or less standard, we are talking about 6 workouts a week with an average of 80 km».

Of the four victories won at the Cross Festival, which is the one you are closest to?

«They were all important but certainly Pabillonis' first place represented the moment in which I felt better from a physical point of view. I ran with agility, I felt an excellent reaction from my legs and I was able to manage myself at best».

Last week he took part in the Tricolori Assoluti in Gubbio.

«Yes, but it didn't go as I had hoped even if participating in an Italian championship is always wonderful: I have a problem with my cruciate ligament which isn't letting me express my best but I still had fun. Competing with so many athletes is always stimulating».

When will he debut on the track?

"I'm thinking of April 16 in Cagliari, on the occasion of the individual Sardinian championships of the 10,000m, a race in which I won the Sardinian title last year".

Which races will you focus on the most?

«The 5000, a distance that I will certainly face for the clubs. Then I'll also do some 3000s, I don't think the 1500s are a very fast test but maybe there will be some outings there too».

On the half marathon instead when will you compete?

«Now we will give priority to the outdoor track season. Once this is over, we'll think about the half marathons that certainly won't be missing».

Is his future in the marathon?

«It's too early to tell, we have to wait at least three years. For sure, the marathon is a race that fascinates me a lot and that I hope to be able to compete later in my career».

How important is it to you to come from a family of athletes?

«Definitely a lot, since I was a child I have breathed this climate. I love running, it's part of me, it's my greatest passion: I can't do without it».

You work as a warehouse clerk in a clothing store: is it possible to reconcile athletics and work?

«Absolutely yes, it is a question of tenacity and determination. Of course, there are moments when you are more tired but you have to go on without ever giving up».
