Sensational ruling from the EU Court of Justice which opens the doors to the Super League .

" The rules of FIFA and UEFA on the prior authorization of interclub football competitions, such as the Super League, violate Union law ", ruled the judges in their opinion on the appeal brought by the Super League on the alleged illegal monopoly of FIFA and UEFA on the organization of international competitions.

Of the original group of 12 clubs that launched the Super League in April 2021, only Real Madrid and Barcelona remained in the field, associated in a European Super League Club (ESLC) . Supported by the marketing agency A22, it brought the case to the Mercantile court in the Spanish capital, which in turn referred the matter to the EU Court of Justice.

The ruling is therefore a blow for FIFA and UEFA and effectively opens the doors to the Super League, which has been completely revised compared to the elite and heavily criticized one in 2021. There will no longer be a dozen big names participating, but 64 teams divided into three leagues with promotion and relegation mechanisms. In the first year of the competition, clubs will be selected based on an index with transparent, performance-based criteria. A streaming platform is also planned for free viewing of all matches .

«We have obtained the right to compete. The UEFA monopoly is over. Football is free. Clubs are now free from the threat of sanctions and free to determine their own future,” said Bernd Reichart, CEO of A22. « For fans: we offer free viewing of all Super League matches . For clubs: income and solidarity expenses will be guaranteed."

Now we need to see the moves of the clubs, even the Italian ones, and at this point the very recent declarations of the FIGC president Gabriele Gravina sound reckless: "I'm waiting for the sentence, but if anyone joins they will be out of everything" , he had threatened.

« The sentence – is the reaction of UEFA – is not an endorsement of the Super League . We will continue with our model and we hope that the football pyramid is safeguarded by European and national laws from the risk of secessions."

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez rejoices: «Today is a great day for the history of football and sport. European club football is not and will never be a monopoly again. We have the duty and responsibility to give European football the new impetus it so badly needs: we will continue to support a modern project, fully compatible with national competitions, open to all, based on sporting merit and which will effectively enforce respect of Financial Fair Play ".
