FIFA has approved the change of nationality of Alessandro Romano , a talented young player born in 2006 who plays for Cagliari. The midfielder, born in Winterthur and raised in Switzerland, had long been at the center of discussions between the Italian and Swiss Football Federations, both interested in securing his future at the international level.
His choice, previewed today by L'Unione Sarda, now opens a new chapter in his career: Romano will be able to consider the possibility of wearing the Azzurri jersey.
The midfielder was reportedly persuaded by Roberto Mancini to accept the Azzurri option . The youngster holds dual citizenship, and FIFA has now made its decision. It remains to be seen whether, based on the subsequent bureaucratic procedures, the arrival of the Roman Empire in Azzurri will truly occur during the international break, which begins on September 20th (for the Rossoblu on the 19th, after the match against Udinese), or whether the deal will take place later.
His development has undoubtedly been influenced by the teachings of Claudio Ranieri , who wanted him in the first team for several matches two seasons ago when he coached Roma, shaping Romano through the rigors of a career that, if expectations are met, could be a top-notch one. And the advice Ranieri must have given to Roberto Mancini may also have influenced the coach's choice, who already in Parma, after the first matchday, asked president Tommaso Giulini for information and tried to convince Cagliari's number 4 to choose Italy.
Incidentally, the following week, during the match against Inter, the presence of Swiss coach Murat Yakın was noted in the city : first at the Poetto bars, at the first stop, and then at the Domus. These courtships attest to the player's importance, as he is, in a sense, being tugged at by two teams with different histories and ambitions. Switzerland reached the quarterfinals of the last World Cup, while Italy missed the tournament for the third consecutive year. However, they are now banking on their talents to renew the ancient grandeur that this long crisis has undermined but not erased.
And while Romano has chosen the Azzurri, another Rossoblu player is about to enter the Coverciano stadium again. Daniel Maldini has been pre-called by Mancini for the upcoming fixtures, given his excellent start to the season . Discussions are also underway regarding Caprile, and, even with the Azzurri in mind, they can only be positive. He should also be back on the list: we'll see if he can compete alongside Napoli's Alex Meret and Guglielmo Vicario, the Juventus goalkeeper who has always been very attached to the Rossoblu, for the role of Donnarumma's understudy.
