The remains of a Romanesque structure dating back to the 11th or 12th century were discovered in Bisarcio , in the territory of Ozieri, in the area of archaeological excavations in progress in the area of the Basilica of Sant'Antioco.

The excavation campaign will go on at least until 12 September 2023 thanks to the concession issued by the Ministry of Culture to the municipality of Ozieri, with the scientific direction of the University of Sassari and the surveillance of the Superintendence of Archeology, Fine Arts and Landscape.

The rediscovered structure was most likely built by the same Pisan workers that the bishop of Bisarcio called to rebuild, in the years between 1.130 and 1.160 , the basilica that had been destroyed by a fire.

The excavations will go on and their continuation "will have to clarify what the function of this structure was, built at a time of particular economic availability by the Bishop of Bisarcio , who in addition to holding religious power also had a noble role towards the population dedicated to agriculture and pastoralism ”, explains Marco Milanese, professor of Archeology at the University of Sassari and director of the excavations.

The excavations have also brought to light some medieval lead seals , which will be restored to attempt a reading that could be useful in reconstructing the activity carried out by the Diocese, which had institutional relations in Sardinia and with the Papacy.

"The Municipality will strive to enhance and promote any initiative aimed at unveiling the entire site of Bisarcio, which is increasingly precious and prestigious, and to encourage the continuation of studies", is the comment by Marco Peralta and Alessando Tedde , mayor and councilor for Culture by Ozieri.
