The decision of the Italian Baseball Softball Federation (FIBS) to revoke the location of the 2025 Regions Tournament, which was supposed to take place in Sardinia between the end of May and the beginning of June, has sparked a strong controversy in the local sports world. The president of the FIBS, Marco Mazzieri, in an interview on the federal website justified the choice with a statement in which he underlined the economic difficulties and the lack of certainty on the financing necessary to guarantee the event's holding.

"The Federal Council made a very difficult and painful decision," Mazzieri said. "Until the last moment, we hoped that the meetings with the institutions and the various interested parties could materialize into something official, but two months after the event, there have been no substantial developments, and we have no certainty about the necessary funding. Unfortunately, we were forced to give up."

According to the president of Fibs, without the necessary financial coverage, the risk of compromising the financial stability of the Federation was too high. The lack of guarantees and the uncertainties about public funds have therefore led to the decision to cancel the 2025 edition of the Torneo delle Regioni in Sardinia. However, the response of the Sardinia Regional Committee was not long in coming. In an official document, president Totoni Sanna announced with satisfaction the funding received from the Sardinia Region for the organization of the event.

The Committee obtained a contribution of 300,000 euros through the call for sporting events of the Regional Department of Tourism, intended for the realization of the Tournament of the Regions 2025. "This is only the first of the results we were expecting, demonstrating the great work carried out by the Regional Committee and all the Sardinian companies in just 90 days", declared Sanna, reiterating the Committee's commitment to promoting sport on the Island. The event would have seen the participation of over 1,200 athletes and technicians from at least 15 Italian regions, with the introduction of disciplines such as Baseball and Baseball for the Blind, in addition to the traditional categories of baseball and softball. The president of the Committee also expressed his disappointment with the decision of the Federal Council, calling it "unjustified" and a serious mistake that has damaged the Sardinian sports movement.

"The Federal Council's decision represents a fracture with the Sardinian baseball and softball movement, affecting the vitality and sporting spirit of our sport", Sanna underlined. The Regional Committee also expressed discomfort towards local institutions and private suppliers who, on behalf of the Federation, had already started the economic commitments for the organization of the event. With thousands of pres and hotels already booked.

"We have submitted requests for funding that have been almost completely successful, and requested financial commitments for accommodation and logistics facilities. The Federal Council's decision has put the entire organizational machine in difficulty," added Sanna. Finally, the Committee invited the Federation to cancel the resolution of March 28 and to allow the immediate resumption of organizational activities, hoping that the management of the Federation can resume for the good of the movement and the values that sport represents.

The affair has raised a heated debate and continues to stir up controversy within the sports world, with the Sardinia Regional Committee loudly calling for the reinstatement of the Regions Tournament on the Island and for the National Federation to take responsibility. The hope is that the situation can be resolved in the best interest of sport and the Sardinian community.
