A delegation from the Sardinia Region in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, to participate in the United Nations World Conference on Climate Change, COP27.

"The climate summit is an important step in the fight against climate change," explains Governor Christian Solinas . He adds: “The planet is sending us alarming signals and we must all do our part to avoid the global crisis. Sardinia is not exempt from this process. In 40 years our land has lost over 100 km of coastline. The island will increasingly suffer from the effects of climate change. The Region has already adopted a nationally recognized adaptation strategy to climate change. The interventions are implemented in synergy with local authorities and are aimed at combating the phenomenon of coastal erosion, that of fires, and hydrogeological instability, through the strengthening of available tools and technical structures. We aim - adds Solinas - on a sustainable development model that promotes renewable sources and energy saving to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and on a remediation program to enhance and protect our landscape ”.

Representing the regional council, the Councilor for Industry with responsibility for energy, Anita Pili, intervened.

INTERNATIONAL COMPARISON - "It is the task of politics to build the strategies necessary to build a future resilient to climate change", underlined Pili, also as President of the Energy Commission of the Conference of Regions, taking part in an event organized by the Lombardy Foundation for the 'Ambiente and the Lombardy Region, entitled Downscaling Climate Change Adaptation policies at regional and local level .

Focus of the debate, an international confrontation between regional governments on the most recent and innovative policies and initiatives to adapt to climate change. Sardinia - said Anita Pili - has for some time been putting in place all the tools necessary to implement those good practices of interaction between local authorities, the scientific community, business and civil society, aimed at ensuring greater effectiveness of adaptation policies ".

RENEWABLE ENERGIES - In discussing the opportunities and criticalities of the actions necessary to fight climate change, the commissioner recalled the recent Energy Law and the provisions on energy communities, energy income, sustainable mobility and Smart grids, implemented by the Executive regional. “We promote renewable energies - confirmed Pili - and we pursue the European objectives in energy matters, starting with development policies aimed at eliminating climate-altering fossil fuels. As the Region of Sardinia, we are implementing all those activities aimed at building strategic policies that are innovative and resilient in the energy sector and which therefore also allow us to achieve the objectives of adapting to climate change ".

Also present was the General Directorate of Civil Protection, which participated in a Side Event organized within COP27, entitled "Prevention and management of forest fires in the Mediterranean and restoration of areas affected by fire", which was held inside of the Israel Pavilion and organized by the NGO Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael - Jewish National Fund (KKL - JNF).

I ROGHI NEL MONTIFERRU - The General Management was invited as a speaker in consideration of its strong experience in the field of fires, for this reason its intervention focused on the management of forest fires on the island, taking as a case study the Montiferru area, devastated by the terrible fire in the summer of 2021. To describe the events that characterized the fire in the Montiferru area, we started with the illustration of the forecast of high temperatures, caused by an ascent of masses of hot air from the North Africa, which brought temperatures over 40 ° to Sardinia for several days, as already foreseen also by the Decentralized Functional Center, in the notices of adverse weather conditions of those days.

The presentation of the Management then gave space to the data that characterized those days, during which there was an impressive mobilization of the entire civil protection system. In fact, in addition to volunteers, Fire Brigade, Barracellar Company and Forestas and CFVA personnel, there were many air vehicles engaged in the fight against fire and at the same time in securing the population. The tragedy of the event, and the dramatic consequences, then led the Regional Council to strengthen, even more, the prevention and mitigation actions, the only truly effective weapons against fire damage.

"MEDITERRANEAN BASIN" - The Region participated in the "COP27" also with the ENI CBC cooperation program "Mediterranean Basin".

As the Managing Authority of the program for Italy, the Sardinia Region was present inside the "Mediterranean Pavilion", the first of its kind to be implemented in the history of the Conference, located in the 'Blue Zone' of COP27, headquarters of climate negotiations. Participation in the World Climate Conference was an important opportunity for Sardinia to share with the international community some of the innovative solutions developed within the projects financed by the cooperation program, such as those aimed at combating the water crisis, reducing the environmental impact of production activities or better manage marine litter. In particular, the Region of Sardinia led three events: "Accelerating the green transition in the Mediterranean: spotlight on financing opportunities", "Tackling the water crisis in the Mediterranean by increasing the use of unconventional water resources", "Accompanying businesses and SMEs towards a green future ".
