While the Calderoli reform on differentiated autonomy is being discussed at a national level, in Sardinia the central theme of strengthening the Special Statute seems to be ignored. This is the complaint that emerged from the meeting organized by the Sardinian Reformers in Cagliari, where politicians, academics and experts discussed the future of the Island in the new scenario of Italian regionalism.
The meeting was attended by Michele Cossa, Umberto Ticca, group leader of the Reformers in the Regional Council, and regional councilor Roberto Deriu (Pd), as well as constitutionalists Tommaso Edoardo Frosini and Gianmario Demuro.
"The national debate on differentiated autonomy risks dangerously leveling all the Regions, weakening the special Statutes", Cossa stated. "Sardinia cannot afford to ignore the issue right now, at the most opportune moment to assert its prerogatives and address the gap of insularity".
Constitutionalists Frosini and Demuro highlighted the fundamental role of implementing rules. "The recent ruling of the Constitutional Court has clarified that Sardinia can obtain greater forms of autonomy only through the procedures provided for by the Statute," explained Frosini. Demuro underlined: "The Special Statute, approved by constitutional law, is the guarantee of our rights. The implementing rules, written in agreement with the State, are the most effective tool to meet the needs of Sardinian citizens."
Ticca, instead, reiterated the importance of implementing the rules of the Statute: «We have presented a motion in the Regional Council to relaunch the autonomy of Sardinia. It is the only way to support the development of the Island and protect its interests».
