A luminous onyx column named after the Janas. The Department of Architecture, Design, and Urban Planning at the University of Sassari presented an installation at the Fuori Salone in Milan that intertwines design research, Sardinian cultural identity, and material experimentation.
The project's protagonists are architecture students Francesco Capula, Agostino Coccoi, and fellow student Miriam Manca, professor Katia Gasparini, and the Marmi Regina company of Verona.
The installation's morphology unfolds vertically according to a modular logic inspired by metaballs, organic forms that simulate drops of attraction and cohesion, creating a totem-like column in which each element, slightly rotated from the central axis, generates variations in section and profile. The heart of the project is the dialogue between light and material: the internal lighting enhances the onyx's veining, transparency, and hues, transforming the stone into an active surface capable of diffusing, screening, or slicing light. The flexibility of its configurations can transform Janas into a lamp, column, screening element, wall, or sculpture.
After the prestigious success recorded in the Lombard capital, the column returns to Sardinia from 29 to 31 May on the occasion of the “Make Fair Sardinia”, scheduled to take place at the Archaeological Museum of Olbia: here, for logistical reasons, a partial 3D reconstruction will be brought.
