In the coming days Angelo Becciu will be fully reinstated in his role as cardinal at the behest of Pope Francis. To announce the sensational turning point - as revealed first of all by the Chartabianca newsletter, news later confirmed by authoritative sources also to the Unione Sarda - was yesterday the same cardinal from Pattada involved in the investigation into the use of funds from the Pietro, in particular for the purchase of a luxury building in London.

The announcement

"On Saturday the Pope telephoned me to tell me that I will be reinstated in my cardinal functions and to ask me to participate in a meeting with all the cardinals to be held in the next few days in Rome - the words that Becciu spoke yesterday morning during a private mass celebrated in front of a group of faithful in Golfo Aranci, where he is spending a few days on vacation -. For this reason, next Sunday - he added - I will not be able to be present at the mass since I am busy in Rome ».

Apparently on Thursday Becciu will board a plane that will take him to the capital, towards the Vatican City. And there he will take part in the consistory (he has already received the formal convocation) for the proclamation of the new cardinals, including Monsignor Arrigo Miglio, archbishop emeritus of Cagliari, set for Saturday 27 August.

The suspension
Becciu had kept the title but had been deprived of the office of Curia and of the rights of the cardinalate from 24 September 2020 . A date engraved in his memory. "From that day - he told in a dramatic hearing of the trial against him still in progress before the judges of the Vatican - a public pillory of worldwide proportions began for me".

The investigation

The high Sardinian prelate has always said he is certain that he will be able to prove his innocence and come out clean from the investigation. An investigation that mainly revolves around the 400 million euro purchase and sale of a luxury property on Sloan Avenue in London (the former headquarters of Harrod's warehouses), which according to the indictment would have caused an 18 million euro hole in the Vatican coffers. According to the promoter of justice, the director of the reckless operation was Cardinal Becciu.
