These are the 2024 data from UnionCamere and Movimprese, processed by the research office of Confartigianato Sardegna , on the world of pets and domestic animals. The snapshot shows a sector in full swing , increasingly oriented towards services and less towards production and traditional commerce.

Confartigianato Sardegna will continue to monitor the sector's evolution , supporting businesses with tools, training, and dedicated services. This is a concrete commitment to transforming the passion for animals into growth opportunities for the entire regional productive fabric.

IN ITALY – At a national level, there are almost 27,000 companies active in the sector , with significant growth in animal care services: in the last five years, +32% with approximately 1,400 new businesses . Veterinary services are also increasing with +39.4% , a sign of a profound change in the relationship between people and pets. The national ranking sees Lombardy in first place with 3,870 businesses , followed by Campania with 2,871 . The phenomenon is also expanding rapidly in Sardinia . Between 2014 and 2024 , businesses providing care services , such as grooming, pet-sitting, training, physiotherapy, and general well-being, increased by 90.1% , while those related to animal trade decreased by 17.5% . These are clear signs of a demand that prioritizes daily well-being over that of owning a pet. This is an evolving sector, adapting to the needs of owners who are increasingly attentive to the health and quality of life of their pets.

Giacomo Meloni , president of Confartigianato Sardegna, states: "The world of pet economy represents a new frontier for artisanal businesses. On the island, we are witnessing the emergence of new professional roles related to animal welfare: qualified groomers, trained pet sitters, artisans who create custom products and high-quality food. This economy focuses on the emotional relationship between humans and animals and creates real jobs, especially for young people and women."

According to Meloni, Sardinian artisans are well-positioned to embrace this evolution. "We have expertise, creativity, and a strong focus on quality service ," she adds. "Now we need to invest in specialized training, digitalization, and business networks to support this new segment. The pet economy is no longer just a niche sector: it is a consolidated reality that offers concrete opportunities for the economic and social development of our regions ."

" Sardinian artisans can become protagonists of this transformation ," Meloni concludes, "not only by offering innovative services, but also by educating the public about a culture of respect and care for animals. Today, the pet economy reflects our way of life, and promoting it means investing in the future ."
