He was probably sure of inheriting a fortune on the death of his mother whose name is linked to a very famous brand all over the world. But Doreen Lofthouse, owner of Fisherman's Friend, the candies that are sold in 120 countries and whose business has an average annual turnover of 55 million pounds, made a will and left nothing to her son.
The wealth of the wealthy English woman - estimated at around 41 million pounds - will instead go to the Lofthouse Foundation, the charity based in Fleetwood, Lancashire. Another three hundred thousand pounds went to its employees.
The entrepreneur had married the heir of the founder Fisherman's Friend in 1960. The couple divorced in 1973, then the woman married her ex-husband's nephew and conquered the international market.
The son will remain at the helm of the company, but “with dry mouth”.
