Now there is a need to enhance and protect the stone giant unearthed in Cagliari, inthe Monte Urpinu Park , by archaeologists Giovanni Ugas and Nicola Dessì with the decisive help of Corrado Mascia, promoter of the Facebook page "I custodi of memory ". According to the mayor Paolo Truzzu it is" a discovery that could open up new scenarios for the city. Unfortunately, few traces remain of the monument's majesty, but what remains allows us to make meaningful assessments on our most ancient history " .
The excavations
The protection presupposes a careful excavation campaign. Ugas and Dessì hope it can be started soon. «We are convinced that the nuraghe of Monte Urpinu was a large and mighty building, one of the largest, if not the largest in Sardinia. The excavations can help us to better understand its characteristics ». According to Truzzu, «we can think of a cultural and touristic enhancement. Obviously we have to talk to the Superintendency to understand which path to follow. The nuraghe and the suggestions it evokes could become aspects capable of enriching an ideal tour of churches, monuments and historic districts to be offered to the attention of tourists ".
The museum
The concept of protection of assets of great archaeological value such as the nuraghe of Monte Urpinu is also linked - the archaeologist Maria Antonietta Mongiu has always emphasized - to the idea of a museum that can collect in an organic way the many finds of the Nuragic civilization found in the capital with an eye to the future. Fifteen years ago, for various reasons, the idea of "Betile" was not realized in the Sant'Elia neighborhood: "How many Ulysses disguised as Norax, Daedalus, Hercules, Iolaus, with myths and knowledge, coming from west, - wrote the scholar - lapped Sardinia because its inhabitants and resources were known? The Gulf of Cagliari has always been a welcoming gateway. That it has become irrelevant in its sea because it is denied a place where it can cross the shadow line of identity simplifications to recognize itself as a synthesis of Mediterranean epics? The legitimate location of the "Betile" in Cagliari was and is necessary, not because it is the capital, but a place of contamination and opportunities for semantic reconstruction. Whoever goes to the Region always inherits that dream ». The Regional Tourism Councilor Gianni Chessa underlines the value that the Solinas Council attributes to archaeological itineraries: «The newly discovered nuraghe fits rightfully into this context. This extraordinary discovery will certainly be discussed at the Archeology Fair scheduled in Cagliari next May ».
Interrogation
The municipal councilor Marcello Polastri, with a question, hopes "the start of archaeological research in Monte Urpinu in synergy with the Superintendency, the University and the Region". In social media, after the article published yesterday on the Union, the Cagliari nuraghe was widely discussed. Many enthusiastically expressed their appreciation to the creators of the discovery. A minority, in the context of a lively dialectic, has turned towards skepticism and open opposition.
