New York Times journalists won a Pulitzer Prize for best international journalism for their coverage of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, the Israeli intelligence fiasco and Israel's extensive military response.
Reuters photographers also won in the breaking news category for their shots of October 7 and the first weeks of Israel's assault on Gaza. In recent years the Pulitzer jury had also decided on tributes to journalists working in the wars in Ukraine and Afghanistan. This year the recipients of the tribute were "the brave reporters and media workers" in Gaza: "In horrific circumstances, an extraordinary number of journalists have died in the effort to tell the story of Palestinians and others in Gaza, a war that it also claimed the lives of poets and writers."
The 2024 Awards for Excellence in American Journalism were announced today in New York.
Another award was given to the Washington Post for columnist Vladimir Kara-Murza's editorials from prison in Russia. Kara-Murza has been in prison since April 2022. He has written comments about Russian President Vladimir Putin and the invasion of Ukraine.
