It appeared after sunset, in a westerly direction. The reference points in the sky were the star Arcturus and the planet Venus. The observation was also possible with the naked eye, or with binoculars.

The day it was closest to Earth was October 12. But its bright tail was also spotted in the following days. Its passage in our sky was also an unrepeatable opportunity for many scholars and enthusiasts, who documented its constant motion: Tsuchinshan-Atlas will in fact never pass through our Solar System again.
