The transition towards the new system of local authorities (six provinces and two metropolitan cities) is being examined by the House. The bill is the first item on the agenda of today's session which also includes the motions for the request for a referendum against differentiated autonomy.

Having rejected the Government's appeal by the Council, and in view of the second level elections to be called by 30 April 2025, the way for the establishment of the new provinces is clear.

But it is controversial, and the opposition - through the voice of Fausto Piga (FdI) - is already talking about the "Todde armchair factory" because the provision provides for eleven new appointments : 8 of extraordinary administrators for the new bodies as identified in the 2021 reform (i.e. for the provinces of Nuoro, Oristano, Gallura, Ogliastra, Sulcis Iglesiente, Medio Campidano, Metropolitan City of Sassari and Metropolitan City of Cagliari), and three of extraordinary commissioners for the old Provinces of Nuoro, Sassari and Southern Sardinia. "We are interested in giving democracy a new lease of life so as to no longer have unsafe schools and dangerous streets," declared the majority speaker Salvatore Corrias (Pd).

For the minority rapporteur Paolo Truzzu (FdI) «the only effect of this law is to replace the current administrations with other subjects, increasing the number and not the way to guarantee the rights of our communities».
