After the 0-0 draw against Belgium on Sunday, Iranian national team players left a handwritten note in the locker room at Los Angeles Stadium, thanking the city for its hospitality .
In the message, left after playing the first two matches of the World Cup, the team announced that they would leave the city "with dignity".
"From ancient Persia thousands of years ago to the civilized Iran of today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and well," it read. " We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honor, and leave with dignity. Thank you, Los Angeles, for your hospitality . And thank you to every Iranian who gave their heart, voice, and soul for Iran during these 180 minutes. May peace, respect, and friendship prevail among all nations."
Accompanying the message written on the blackboard in the locker room were two hashtags: #Minab and #168. A clear reference to the US bombing of a girls' school in the Iranian city of the same name, which killed 175 people, including 168 girls, on the first day of the conflict .
The Iranian national team also played their first match against New Zealand in Los Angeles, which ended 2-2. Now, with two points from as many matches, they have a real chance of qualifying for the round of 32: they will close their group stage on Saturday, June 27th, against Egypt, Group G leaders with four points, followed by Iran and Belgium with two, and New Zealand with just one point. The best third-placed teams also qualify.
The team has now had to return to Tijuana, Mexico, after Washington denied visas to some members of the coaching staff.
