The hinterland of Sardinia is still struggling with depopulation. Citizens age, and young people leave: the two phenomena, united, cause demographic impoverishment which is then linked to economic decline.

Data that are highlighted in the Cna report according to which the demographic decline of the municipalities located in the internal areas of the island reached, in 2020, over 137 thousand people, while the population on the coastal strip increases by 303 thousand people.

But in just seven years, over 230 million euros of annual income have been lost for residents in the hinterland: between 2012 and 2019 the total income fell by 4.2% for the municipalities of the interior, while it is much less reduced in the coastal strip (-1.8%).

Not only that, the data show that the average infrastructure accessibility index calculated by Cresme is 4% lower than the municipalities of the coastal strip. "Without an adequate development project that pays greater attention to the socio-economic dynamics of the hinterland through the enhancement and protection of the immense landscape and cultural heritage of the inland areas - say Pierpaolo Piras and Francesco Porcu, respectively president and regional secretary of Cna -, the risk is that the phenomenon itself, accelerating, could lead, in certain situations, not only to an economic death but also to a much more irreversible death from the registry office ”.
