The first doctorate in Italy dedicated to the technological and biomedical development of hadrontherapy , an advanced form of radiotherapy that uses heavy particles such as protons and carbon ions to treat the most complex tumors, arrives in Cagliari.

It is coordinated by Annalisa Bonfiglio, professor at the University of Cagliari. The "The hadron academy" project is promoted by Cnao , the national center of oncological hadrontherapy and by the Iuss university school of Pavia, together with the University of Cagliari, and is open to five students who, for merit, will be able to access scholarships.

The course has a duration of 3 years . It is aimed at doctors, medical physicists, biologists, bioengineers, process engineers, physicists, jurists, economists, philosophers, with the aim of training figures capable of managing and developing research on aspects related to hadrontherapy with particular regard to the areas technological (for example the use of new heavy particles such as helium and oxygen), and biomedical (for example the interaction between hadrontherapy and immunotherapy and the continuous improvement of the effectiveness of the treatment through latest generation technologies) with a reference also to the implications ethical and legal related to technological innovation and its management in terms of risk and complexity.

Three important research frontiers will also be explored, such as the interaction between hadrontherapy and immunotherapy, one of the most promising and advanced weapons in the fight against cancer, the role of molecular biology in defining the "genetic profile" of the tumor for ever more adequate therapeutic strategy , and the application of artificial intelligence to images both in the diagnostic phases and to monitor the results of the treatment and identify any predictive factors of response for an ever better personalization of the therapy.
