The England women's national team has been crowned European champion for the first time in its history.

The English beat Germany 2-1 in extra time at Wembley , in front of more than 87 thousand spectators, an absolute record for a European final, even for men.

For Germany it is the first defeat of nine finals played in the continental tournament, while the English had lost the other two previously played.

In London the party explodes : thousands of people in Trafalgar Square cheer for the "Lionesses" after watching the game from the big screens.

The victory of the British "will be a source of inspiration for the girls and women of today and for future generations", commented Queen Elizabeth in a note from Buckingham Palace. "Your success - continues the Queen - goes beyond the trophy you have won with merit. From now on you will be taken as a model".
