The Torre dell'Elefante will be open to the public again from Wednesday, after the structural consolidation works wanted by the municipal administration of Cagliari.
The details of the intervention were illustrated today by the mayor Paolo Truzzu, in the presence of the Superintendent of Archeology, Fine Arts, Landscape for the Metropolitan City of Cagliari and the Provinces of Oristano and South Sardinia, Patricia Olivo, of the Councilors for Public Works, Gabriella Deidda and to Culture, Maria Dolores Picciau.
"The work was long and difficult - explained the mayor in the Sala del Retablo in the Town Hall - but it has produced its fruits. There have been many difficulties, but what matters most now is that from Wednesday the Torre dell ' Elefante will be usable again ".
The monument will be accessible, upon reservation required, every day except Mondays from 9 to 15.
Seven visits of one hour each are available, limited to ten people for the moment with a cost that will be three euros for the full ticket.
"The goal - explained the Director of the Culture Service, Antonella Delle Donne - is to expand availability but for the moment we are still tied to these numbers to cope with the containment legislation of Covid-19".
Satisfaction with the reopening was also expressed by the Superintendent Patricia Olivo who followed the intervention: "It is a medieval monument that has a stone structure that holds up, while the wooden structures are more delicate and needed an intervention. the difficulty was precisely that of consolidating the Tower, but the constant collaboration between the Municipality and the Superintendency, with architects and technicians, seems to me to have given a very satisfactory result ".
"An intervention - added the commissioner Gabriella Deidda - entirely senior by the administration which allowed the group involved in the intervention to do a great job".
Now the monument is back in the availability of the city which will be able to benefit from a cultural point of view but also from a tourist point of view. In this key, the Councilor for Culture, Maria Dolores Picciau, gave a double reading to the reopening of the Tower: "In the meantime, I realize that this is the beginning of a long series of openings and we are working towards this. Then I see the Tower under a double aspect: an internal one, on the role of what is not only an important monument but also a well-rooted sign of identity, and an external one, with a site that is a powerful cultural and tourist attraction ".
