Forty years after the Chernobyl disaster, the bond with Sardinia is stronger than ever. The island made an extraordinary contribution to welcoming children from contaminated areas after the 1986 nuclear disaster. In Bari Sardo, on Saturday at 6:00 PM, the documentary film "The Storks of Chernobyl" by director Karim Galici, dedicated to this remarkable story of solidarity, will be screened in the City Council Chamber.

During the meeting, Natallia Matusevich, representative of Cittadini del Mondo in Ogliastra, will share her personal experience as a child fostered: a story of human bonds and friendship that continues today. In 2026, the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, the screening represents a moment of remembrance and reflection, but also a tribute to the families who opened their homes, offering protection, care, and new life prospects, the organizers explain. In addition to the testimonies of the Sardinian families who fostered them and the children they fostered, the documentary features exclusive images taken in the exclusion zone around the plant: a journey to the places where it all began. The meeting will open with greetings from Councilor Maria Francesca Uda.

The film is currently on a long tour across Italy and abroad, bringing to the world a testament to a supportive and welcoming Sardinia: an island that continues to build bonds between people, stories, and communities.
