The Democratic Party has submitted a bill to the Chamber on ius soli and ius scholae . The first signatory of the measure, Democratic MP Ouidad Bakkali , announced this to Ansa.

The law provides for the ius soli, "in the case of legal residence for one year of one of the two parents", and the ius scholae "for children who entered Italy before the age of 12 and who attended school for at least 5 years" .

In this calculation, it is specified, « preschool is also included ». Furthermore, «aligning ourselves with the majority of European countries, the years of continuous residence required» to obtain Italian citizenship are reduced from 10 to 5 .

"I arrived in Italy at 2 years old and with the current rules I acquired citizenship at 23. With the ius scholae I would have gotten there much earlier", explains Bakkali . The proposal also provides that "the contributions for the citizenship request will be donated to the Ministry of Education for civic education projects".
