One of the cult bands on the island's current punk rock scene, and a fresh new addition from the capital to accompany them: this Saturday at the Fabrik in Cagliari, The Colvins, a Sardinian quartet blending pop punk and alternative rock, will perform. They've been active since 2014, sharing the stage with Atomikah, a band only revealed in September but already showing promise. The evening will begin at 9:00 PM and conclude with an eclectic DJ set by composer, pianist, and street percussionist Michele Angius.
The Colvins are not a new name to our magazine, having already appeared last year with the release of the group's latest album. Formed in 2012 in Monastir, they debuted two years later with "My Future Will Be Bad," a raw and energetic pop punk with garage and suburban overtones. After six years and lineup changes, the four Colvins return with "The Last Ride Home," a punchy and decidedly more mature five-track extended play. Unable to perform it live due to the pandemic, they once again entered the studio to make up for it with a full-length studio album. Thus, in 2024, they released "Nothing to Write Home About," a substantial new chapter in the group's saga, a mature reflection that blends punk rock sounds with hints of '90s emo.
Atomikah, on the other hand, are practically newly formed, having debuted just this week with the single "People Pleaser": already a fitting measure of the stylistic signature of the Cagliari-based group, who manage to combine a more than successful hodgepodge of garage rock, ska, and psychobilly (a punk degeneration of Buddy Holly and co.'s rockabilly) with female vocals reminiscent of swing and big band, creating a chimerical imagery amidst streets daubed with punk-inspired graffiti and smoky jazz clubs.
