After a success like “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig can now consider herself welcomed with open doors by the world of Hollywood. With seven Oscar nominations, and the merit of having become the first woman in the history of cinema to make a film that has exceeded a billion dollars in box office, the acclaimed filmmaker has not held a grudge for not being nominated for best director, putting an end to the controversy on social media that preceded the night of March 10 and preparing for her next project without running into further distractions.
She is currently working on the reboot of “The Chronicles of Narnia,” the film series based on CS Lewis’s 20th-century fantasy masterpiece that has won the attention of audiences and critics since its debut in 2005 with a trilogy that is still among the most acclaimed in the category. By signing an agreement with Netflix before the film about the Mattel doll even saw the light, Gerwig will commit to directing at least two titles in the franchise. The opportunity already creates considerable expectation since the director has appreciated stories set in the world of Aslan since she was young, and demonstrates a very close bond with the original work.
In a recent interview, we also discover the pressures that a project of this magnitude requires one to manage: «I am slightly in a state of terror because I really love Narnia. I loved the series so much as a kid. And now that I am an adult, I am intimidated to do the project. It is something that is really worth being intimidated by. Not being British, I feel a particular pressure to do it properly... I think it is like when Americans do Shakespeare, there is a slight feeling of reverence and maybe we should treat it with a little more care. It is not from our country».
According to Matthew Belloni's latest newsletter "What I'm Hearing", the remake of "The Chronicles of Narnia" will only be released on Netflix's streaming service, thus missing its cinematic appointment. The decision seems to have been taken firmly by the platform's executives, and the director's insistence was of little use, as she did not hide her disappointment. There seems to have been a common vision on the selection of the cast: together with the choice of Louis Partridge for a role still unknown, we discover from Deadline that the young Saoirse Ronan will collaborate with Gerwig again, after the successful partnership in the previous "Lady Bird".
With production set to begin this fall, there’s still no word on which Lewis novel will be adapted first, but it’s safe to assume that at least one of the films will be about “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” given its fame. Speaking from a different perspective, some of the original trilogy’s stars have also been vocal about a reboot. Speaking to Bleeding Cool, William Moseley said he was skeptical about returning to the franchise, resigned to leaving his time as Peter Pevensie behind him: “I’m not a part of that world anymore, which sometimes makes me sad because I love the world of Narnia. It’s like I’m in Star Wars and I can see what the Stormtroopers were like.” Although he knows his return is unlikely, the actor does not hide his desire to visit the set as soon as the opportunity arises: "You're a bit like a child when you're on set, so I would love to go there even just to see what it's like and what they're building. I hope they'll let me do it with Anna, Georgie, Skandar and Ben."
