It must be admitted that the wait for Matt Reeves' "The Batman 2" is starting to get worrying. Three years after the official announcement - following the extraordinary success of the first chapter starring Robert Pattinson, which grossed over 770 million dollars at the global box office - fans of the bat man have tried to pass the time with the spin-off series "The Penguin". Focused on the adventures of the supervillain known as The Penguin, played by Colin Farrell, the series continued the events of the 2022 film, preparing the groundwork for the developments of the next film.

But even after the TV show, there has been little encouraging news about the sequel. Pattinson himself joked about it last March while promoting Bong Joon-ho’s “Mickey 17.” Asked if work on “The Batman 2” would begin soon, the star replied: “I f**king hope so! I started out as a young Batman and now I’m going to end up as a f**king old Batman in the sequel.”

The first postponement of the release, initially scheduled for October 2026, was quickly followed by a further postponement to October 1, 2027. The causes would appear to be linked to personal issues directly involving Reeves, in addition to the fact that the script underwent numerous revisions before arriving at a final draft.

According to the latest rumors, the agreed date for the delivery of the script to Warner and DC Studios was last June 23. If everything goes as planned, filming should begin in January of next year, marking a five-year absence of the bat man from the big screen. It is understandable, therefore, that the situation has generated a certain nervousness, both within the studios and among fans, so much so that the hypothesis - not entirely unfounded - of a possible departure of Reeves from the project has circulated online.

James Gunn, a director with a long history in comic book movies and current co-head of DC Studios, once again came to his colleague's defense. After the constant protests and accusations - often unfounded - aimed at Reeves, the director of the new "Superman" did not miss an opportunity to take his side: "The only reason for the delay is that there is no completed script yet (those who follow me here probably already know this). Matt is committed to making the best movie possible, and no one can predict how long it will take to write a script. Once finished, it will take about two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production of a film of this magnitude".

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn also admitted that he can’t wait to see what Reeves has in mind for the sequel. Showing complete confidence, he added: “People should stop stressing Matt, let him write the script in his own time. That’s how it works. He doesn’t owe you anything just because you liked his movie. You liked it because it’s Matt’s. So let him work the way he wants to. He’s got a lot of other things to do, so I don’t think he’s affected by it. He’s fine. But I get annoyed on his behalf. There’s no reason to be so impatient. The movie will come out when he’s happy with the script. And Matt will never give me the script until he’s completely happy with it.”

A few days earlier, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn had also clarified the issue of Reeves' so-called BatVerse, and whether it could become part of the new DC Universe in the future. Without mincing words, the director stated that the chances of seeing Pattinson and the other characters reappear in the next adaptations are minimal: "We should think about it. It's not like we've never talked about it. I would never say there's zero chance, because you never know. But I don't see it as likely. It's not likely at all."

And, once again, to put people's minds at ease, he reiterated: "I'll also add that The Batman - Part II has not been cancelled. That's the other thing I hear all the time: that the sequel to The Batman has been cancelled. No. We don't have a script. Matt is slow. Let him take his time. Let him do what he's doing. God, people are bad. Let him do his thing."
