He was heading to the port of Livorno from where he was supposed to board a ship to Sardinia. In the territory of Ponte a Egola, a hamlet of San Miniato, in the province of Pisa, the Carabinieri stopped the truck driven by Rossano Murru, 49, a truck driver from Tertenia. At the end of a thorough search, also triggered by the tension shown by the driver when he stopped, the officers found 35 kilos of cocaine hidden in the glove compartment of the vehicle. By order of the magistrate on duty, Murru was arrested and transferred to the prison in Pisa, at the disposal of the judicial authorities. The truck driver, who the Prosecutor's Office is accusing of possessing narcotics for the purpose of dealing, will have to explain the origin of the drugs and on whose behalf he was transporting them. According to a rough estimate, if placed on the market the drugs could have generated a turnover of over 3.5 million euros.
The arrest
The incident occurred a few days ago. The truck driver, owner of an individual transport company, was in Tuscany for work. A habit. It was around 9 am when, during a territorial control service, near the Ponte a Egola interport, the Carabinieri personnel stopped the truck with only Murru on board. The restless attitude and the attempt to stay close to the vehicle aroused the suspicions of the Carabinieri, who asked for the support of the radiomobile patrol for a more thorough check. The colleagues arrived in the hamlet in a few minutes. The inspection brought to light 30 blocks of cocaine, each weighing 1.2 kilos, hidden inside the side glove compartment of the truck. Thirty-five kilos in all. The man, after the ritual formalities at the barracks, was transferred to the Don Bosco prison in accordance with the order of the magistrate on duty who opened an investigation.
The investigation
The Pisa Public Prosecutor's Office has delegated the investigation to the Carabinieri. The military will have to trace the origin of the drugs and the associated drug dealing network. The cocaine stored inside the vehicle was almost certainly destined for the Sardinian market. Previously, Murru himself had ended up in the dock in the investigation into the gang specializing in robberies of armored vans. It was 2017 when, together with thirty other people, he was sent for trial. The magistrate of the Cagliari DDA, Danilo Tronci, claimed that the truck driver had supported the organization of the foiled robbery of an armored van near Voghera. Two years later, the judges of the Lanusei Court had acquitted him of all charges.
