Territorial continuity, Todde in Brussels: «We asked for fair rules»
Meeting with the European Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, together with the Councillor Barbara MancaMeeting in Brussels between Alessandra Todde, President of the Sardinia Region, Barbara Manca, Councilor for Transport and Apostolos Tzitzikostas, European Commissioner for Transport and Sustainable Tourism. On the table the issue of territorial continuity, a very topical issue on the Island in this period and not only.
The Region says the meeting was very positive. "I came to Brussels because I believe that on important issues such as territorial continuity, formal letters or technical discussions are not enough," says President Todde. "We need presence, we need voice, we need determination. Above all, we need those who represent a people to do so by looking those who make decisions in the eye ."
Todde addressed the issues with the European Commissioner. "As a Greek and former governor," the president said about Tzitzikostas, "he knows the reality of the island well and has fully understood the difficulties we face every day in Sardinia to exercise a right that should be taken for granted: that of being able to move, of not feeling cut off. We are an island surrounded by the sea, but we cannot continue to be treated as an exception or a footnote in European regulations ."
With Councilor Barbara Manca, Todde illustrated the limits of the current model of territorial continuity. "A system that does not allow companies to plan effectively, that leaves us exposed in times of greatest need and that today can only guarantee workers' mobility in the winter months," Todde explains. "We have made a clear, unambiguous request: we are not asking for discounts, we do not want shortcuts, we are not asking to break the rules. But we demand - yes, we demand - that those rules are fair, reliable, applicable. That they do not exclude us, but include us."
In closing, the president added: " The right to mobility is the right to live with dignity in one's own land . And this right must be guaranteed to every Sardinian citizen, without exceptions."
