Hunter Armstrong has set a new world record in the 50m backstroke .

The 21-year-old American champion swam in 23.71 seconds during the ongoing World Swimming Championships in Greensboro, United States.

Olympic gold medalist in Tokyo with the 4x100 mixed relay, he broke the previous record of 23.80 seconds set by the Russian Kliment Kolesnikov during the European Championships in Budapest on May 18, 2021.

"It's something I've always wanted and I'm over the moon right now," he said after the race that validated his qualification for the next World Championships to be held in Budapest from 18 June to 3 July.
