Federica Brignone , who had just recovered from a serious injury just months before the Winter Games, won the gold medal in the women's Super-G in Milan-Cortina , ahead of the President of the Republic , Sergio Mattarella , who was in the front row on the Olympia delle Tofane slope. The Italian skier's fantastic time of 1'23"41 placed her ahead of Frenchwoman Romane Miradoli (silver) and Austrian Cornelia Huetter (bronze).
Disappointment for the other Italians: Sofia Goggia made a mistake, not completing the downhill, and the other two Italians Laura Pirovano (fifth) and Elena Curtoni (seventh) were off the podium.
"I thought about skiing, I tried to do my best, I said all or nothing , but I didn't think I could win gold," Federica Brignone told Rai Sport after her triumph. And on her record-breaking recovery from injury: "You never expected this, never in my life, it's something special."
