Now it's official: the ancient cross that was stolen from the Parish many years ago returns to Mandas.

Mayor Umberto Oppus announced it: «The property, thanks to the interlocution of the lawyer Renzo Persico, has just officially communicated the return of the cross to Mandas». The agreement was reached after a not very simple negotiation: in exchange for the cross, the owner who had purchased it at auction will receive compensation for the sum spent.

«The UK auction house Sotheby's has just authorized the shipment and the president of the Sardinia Foundation Giacomo Spissu will grant the Municipality of Mandas, which will then give the Parish, 10,000 euros for the return of the important Sardinian work of art of 1636", says Oppus.

The precious sacred object was stolen decades ago from the town church, only to recently reappear at a prestigious English auction. Mayor Oppus, after various discussions, managed to reach an agreement with whoever holds the ancient relic for its restitution. Now it's official: the return is scheduled for the week from 8 to 13 January 2024.

The processional cross was made in Mandas in 1636 commissioned by the Reverend Sisinnio Putzu and stolen by unknown persons in the early seventies.
