Great success yesterday evening at the Exma in Cagliari for the first public screening of Goppà, the short film in Sardinian by director Roberto Pili, which debuted at the ninth edition of the Babel Film Festival, the first international film competition entirely dedicated to productions in minority languages.
The film was greeted with long applause and strong participation from the audience . What was most striking was the film's ability to intertwine a tense and profound narrative with a strong and proud linguistic identity.
Written by Giuseppe Ungari (who is also one of the protagonists) and produced by Francesco Pili, the film tells the story of the meeting between two former criminals, Giuse and Paolo – played respectively by Ungari and Pierpaolo Massa – after twenty years of separation.
The first has now left his criminal life behind, living peacefully thanks to the proceeds of the past; the second, just out of prison, returns to Cagliari with old scores to settle. A face to face suspended between memories and grudges, which leads the viewer towards an unexpected and tense ending.
Further enhancing the work is the original soundtrack by DJ ICE ONE, a historic name in Italian hip-hop, who was able to create a raw, dense musical accompaniment that is perfectly coherent with the atmospheres of the story.
The film is one of the most significant proposals of the Babel Film Festival, organized since 2010 by the Società Umanitaria – Cineteca Sarda / Centro Servizi Culturali di Cagliari, an event that has been able to valorize productions in “other” languages over time, bearers of cultures and sensibilities that are often marginalized.
