«Today we cultivate the memory of a place that is a symbol for hundreds of municipalities and families in Sardinia. On this land an entire generation of Sardinians fought a war that did not belong to them, that they did not know and left their island for the first time to go to a front where they unfortunately met their death."

This was declared by the president of the Sardinia Region, Christian Solinas, who today, in Asiago, in the first of the three days in memory of the fallen of the Sassari Brigade, in the presence of the civil and military authorities, celebrated the over two hundred Sassarini, heroes of the First World War world, with the laying of a laurel wreath at the commemorative monument in the Parco delle Rimembranze, in the heart of the city on the Sette Comuni plateau, where, between 1916 and 1917, the Dimonios, almost all originally from the island, found death fighting against the Austro-Hungarian army in the historic battle of Monte Zebio.

«Remembering all this», he added, «means keeping alive the link between Sardinia and these lands, but above all keeping alive that set of values that must guide us in repudiating war in all its forms and building peace. In that conflict the young people of the Sassari Brigade gave an enormous blood contribution to the whole country and built a dream which was the expectation of our country's gratitude towards Sardinia. We are here today to continue to remember their sacrifice and finally build the deserved response."

Also present at the commemoration were the regional councilor for Public Works, Pierluigi Saiu, as well as the delegation of the Sardinian mayors of the municipalities to which the fallen soldiers belonged and the representatives of the Ministry of Defence, the Veneto Region and the municipal administration of Asiago.
