Slight growth in employment also in Sardinia, but these are part-time and fixed-term work contracts . Therefore, precariousness and poverty are increasing, as are accidents at work and depopulation.
This morning, Cgil Cisl and Uil, in Cagliari, outlined the situation of the labor market on the island. The data illustrated by the three unions are for 2024. A significant territorial, generational and gender gap emerges. The province of South Sardinia is suffering the most and, as far as the population segment is concerned, women and young people . In this part of the island, employment is stuck at 52.5%, much lower than the regional average . Of this percentage, only 8.57% are jobs regulated by stable contracts. The remainder is precarious . Also in the province of South Sardinia, women who have a permanent contract are only 6.22% against 10.3% of men. The gender gap also affects the employment rate: the female one is lower than the male one by about 14 percentage points . Things are certainly not better for young people. The age group taken into consideration is that between 15 and 24 years: the employment rate is 17.9%, much lower than the national average .
Things are a little better in the metropolitan area of Cagliari, where employment increased by 3.4% compared to 2023, reaching 61.7% . But here too, in most cases these are part-time and precarious contracts . Women work in the Cagliari area by 10% compared to men. The people of Cagliari can at least smile when it comes to youth employment, which stands at 20.4%, in line with the national average.
In Sardinia , the unemployment rate among young people is 10 percentage points higher than the total rate .
Work-related accidents on the Island - at least those reported - were 11,251 last year, a slight increase compared to the previous year . An even sadder note: last year , work-related deaths increased: 28 against 23 in 2023. Absolute poverty, which affects 8.4% of Sardinian families, has never stopped in the last two years. The active population, that is, those able to work, fell from 1,000,179 to 990,754 units between 2023 and 2024 alone.
The unions raise the alarm and propose a "pact for work and sustainability". "We need to network", said Simona Fanzecco, territorial secretary of Cgil , "involving businesses and institutions". For Andrea Lai, regional secretary of Uil , "we need to reverse the trend once and for all, especially in Sulcis , in serious economic and social crisis". Giuseppe Atzori, territorial secretary of Cisl , said that "we need to make serious investments and guarantee quality employment, capable of keeping the youngest in Sardinia".
