An archive of extraordinary importance for cinema in Sardinia and beyond, which is reopened and revisited today. Celebrations for the sixtieth anniversary of the Cineteca Sarda continue, with the first films acquired by the archive returning to the big screen with screenings in Cagliari and Carbonia scheduled until October 27th . The program features Soviet silent films, neorealism, social commentary, and local history, curated by the Società Umanitaria .
Founded in 1966 on the initiative of Fabio Masala , the Cineteca is celebrating this important milestone with a screening following the presentation of the " Nara " digital archive project in the capital and the inauguration of the photographic exhibition on Fiorenzo Serra in Sassari . Titled " 60 Years of the Sardinian Cineteca. The Origins. Birth of a Film Archive ," the screenings themselves precede the national conference " The Sardinian Cineteca and Italian Film Archives: Perspectives and Future, " scheduled for October 23 and 25.
Not just a simple re-presentation of key works of the seventh art, but a return to the ideas of preservation, awareness, and dissemination of cinematic culture , foundational to the Cineteca. The first acquisitions now on display reflect a vision of cinema capable of questioning society, giving voice to those who have been excluded and contributing to the development of a critical eye—cultural roots also evoked by Antonello Zanda , director of the Cagliari-based Centro Servizi Culturali della Società Umanitaria .
After the two meetings on Monday 19th at the Greenwich Cinema , in via Sassari 67 in the capital with " Storms over Asia " (1928) by Vsevolod Pudovkin , and on Tuesday 20th in the Fabio Masala Room of the Great Mine of Serbariu , with " The Salt of the Earth " (1954) by Herbert J. Biberman and " The Island of Coal " (1952) by Romolo Marcellini , we continue today at the Cinema Odissea in Cagliari , with the historic " Paisà " (1946) by Roberto Rossellini which will be screened at 6.30pm in viale Trieste 84 . The series of Carbonia events closes with the story of Italian migration " Give Us This Day " (1949) by Edward Dmytryk ‒ based on the novel "Christ in concrete" by Pietro Donato ‒ one last time at the Sala Masala at 6pm on Thursday 22nd , while the 1948 honorary Oscar-winning " Shoeshine " (1946) by Vittorio De Sica concludes the series on 27th October , again at 6pm at the Greenwich in the capital.
The national conference will conclude on Saturday the 24th with a film concert of " Cainà ," a silent film by Gennaro Righelli , now enhanced by the music of Mauro Palmas . The concert will take place on the stage of the Auditorium of the Cagliari Conservatory , with free admission upon reservation . The sixtieth anniversary celebrations will also extend to Sassari and Alghero on December 4th .
