In the S'Aspru area in Siligo there is an ancient enchanted church, full of charm and suggestion.
It is officially called Santa Maria Bubalis , but the Silighesi almost always call it the church of "Mesumundu" . As often happens, it was a forgotten monument , closed for almost 10 years. Today, however, the mayor of Siligo Giovanni Porcheddu, after a refurbishment, has reopened it to the public , on the occasion of the Romanesque Day, since the church belongs to this style and era.
It was officially erected in 1064, even if in reality in the precious monument there are Byzantine and even Roman traces, given that in the place where it is located there were some thermal baths. But there is more: thanks to a project drawn up by the municipal administration, the parish of Siligo received regional funding of 150 thousand euros , for a complete restoration of the building.
However, today's partial reopening was also a success.
"Dozens of tourists came to visit the church, intrigued by the beauty of the monument and its history - comments the mayor Giovanni Porcheddu -. The church of Mesumundu for the whole community is a great cultural resource, which risked being abandoned and passed into the With the funding of 150 thousand euros it will return to its former glory and will be returned to all Sardinians and visitors. We will try - he concludes - to contract out the works as soon as possible ".
