"The big new feature next season will be on-pitch announcements . That is, the referee will be able to explain the decision made after a VAR intervention directly in the stadium and on TV."

Gianluca Rocchi , referee designator for Serie A and B football, announced this when he made the new procedure official during the pre-season meeting in Cascia.

"This is an important step forward in our communications, which we've been pursuing with transparency for years," added Rocchi.

"Now, however," the referee concluded, "the explanations will be given in real time, in front of everyone."
