Sardinia confirms its position at the top of the national rankings for waste management. In 2023, the average percentage of separate waste collection on the island reached 76.46%, approaching the ambitious target set for 2029, i.e. 80% , with some territorial entities that have already exceeded this figure. Among the most significant performances were the Province of South Sardinia and the Province of Oristano , which recorded 79.7% and 81.5% respectively, consolidating their position as examples of regional excellence. The Metropolitan City of Cagliari also performed well, reaching 78.2% and demonstrating room for further growth.
Among the municipalities with over 30,000 inhabitants, Nuoro and Oristano stand out with collection percentages of 83.47% and 80.91% respectively. Among the medium and small municipalities, Carloforte (89.46%, the municipality with the highest figure in the Province of South Sardinia), Palau (88.31%, the municipality with the highest figure in the Province of Sassari), Gonnostramatza (85.04%, the municipality with the highest figure in the Province of Oristano), and Villaputzu (88.03%) stand out, virtuous examples of sustainability and optimization of services. Among the municipalities of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, the highest figure is that of Settimo San Pietro , with a percentage of 83.87%.
"These extraordinary results are a source of pride for all of Sardinia," said the Councilor for Environmental Protection, Rosanna Laconi. "They demonstrate that our Island is capable of acting as a model for the rest of the country, thanks to the joint commitment of institutions, local administrations and citizens."
A bitter pill only for Sassari, which has recorded delays in the full implementation of the separate waste collection service, reaching 60.96% . "We are confident that the intentions of the new municipal administration of Sassari will quickly translate into concrete actions", commented Laconi. "The Region is ready to support every effort to fill the gap and also allow Sassari to contribute to the collective success of Sardinia".
Since 2021, the Island has demonstrated stability and continuity in its results, consolidating its position among the top three Italian excellences. Although other virtuous regions, such as Veneto and Emilia-Romagna, have recorded more significant increases, strengthening or improving their positions, Sardinia remains one of the best performing regions, well above the national objective of 65% separate waste collection. "This success encourages us to continue on the path we have taken, consolidating the goals achieved and working on the critical issues that still exist," concluded Laconi. "It is a commitment to future generations, so that our Island remains an example of balance between progress and respect for the environment."
