This is not a new discovery, but the gradual resurfacing in all its splendor of the south-western tower of Nuraghe Iloi fills with satisfaction not only those who are working on it, but also the entire Sediese community. Professor Anna Depalmas, who collaborates in the consolidation and restoration works of the nuraghe, followed primarily by the Superintendency for the metropolitan city of Cagliari and for the provinces of Oristano and South Sardinia headed by Alessandro Usai, and is in charge of the archaeological excavation in the nuragic village of Iloi, explains the state of the art of the interventions.
"The continuation of the work of securing, consolidating and clearing the entire nuragic complex - highlights Depalmas - is bringing this immense treasure back to light , thanks to the removal of the collapse that cluttered part of the wall of the archaic nuraghe and the outside of the south-western tower. It is a structure of at least two meters that increasingly increases the understanding of the complex building of Iloi and enriches the entire archaeological area".
As regards the area of the surrounding village, these are works that began on 8 March 2022 and constitute the continuation of the investigations already underway for some time, mainly concentrated on the excavation of new structures, including the large sub-elliptical one built a short distance from the north-eastern curtain wall of the nuraghe .
The investigations are conducted by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Sassari with a ministerial concession , under the direction of Professor Anna Depalmas assisted in the field by Drs. Marta Pais, Rossana Conti, Veronica Ortu and Dr. Gerolamo Barra and Italian and foreign students and archaeologists are participating.
More generally, what appears to the eyes of visitors is a completely redeveloped “Iloi, Ispiluncas, Serra Linta Archaeological Park” thanks to some important interventions that now make the entire historical area much more accessible. A series of works have in fact already been concluded for which the municipal administration has invested a total of 390 thousand euros . In particular, all the spaces have been cleaned and new walkways have been created, to allow even those who move with difficulty to admire its beauty. Adequate signage has also been installed that will allow a more accurate visit by everyone.
«The management - underlines the mayor Salvatore Pes - is entrusted to the " Associazione Iloi" which already takes care of the Museum of the territory - ready to provide, upon request, the opportunity of guided tours».
The archaeological area, continuously affected by new discoveries thanks to the archaeological research campaigns by the University of Sassari, is one of the most important in Sardinia.
