The Regional Government has approved the resolution that establishes the ban on fishing for sea urchins in the waters of Sardinia starting from 22 January 2022.

The stop will last for three years.

The Region has also given its ok to the guidelines for support in favor of professional underwater fishermen, for which a total of 2 million and 800 thousand euros have been allocated (400 thousand euros for 2021 and one million and 200 thousand euros for each of the years 2022 and 2023).

"A necessary stop - declared the Councilor for Agriculture, Gabriella Murgia - to allow the recovery of the stocks and the reconstitution of the resource in our territorial sea, put at risk by the massive withdrawal carried out in recent years. This over-exploitation, if perpetrated , could lead in the short term to the collapse of the resource and the commercial extinction of the species, therefore it was necessary to intervene with drastic management measures and with a temporary closure ".

"During these three years, with the involvement of the fishermen themselves, we will implement a scientific monitoring plan to assess the effects of the closure of fishing and we will give operators the opportunity to carry out environmental recovery activities, such as cleaning the seabed and removing equipment. All these activities will be entrusted to the Agris Agency, which will draw up a specific operational plan, having consulted the regional technical advisory committee for fisheries and aquaculture ", concluded the representative of the Giunta Solinas.
