A two-way race is underway in Ittiri for the Democratic Party's primary elections, calling for a mayoral candidate ahead of the local elections to be held next spring. Not only is outgoing Tourism Councilor Baingio Cuccu a candidate, but Giovanna Scanu, president of the Democratic Party's regional assembly, is also in the running . The Democrats have decided to hold the primary elections on March 1st, involving all citizens, a decision later confirmed by the party's assembly.
"This means that the mayoral candidate hasn't yet been chosen. There are two legitimate candidates," Scanu explains, "and the primary vote will decide—the same primary that would have no reason to exist if there were already a candidate. It's equally clear," he adds, "that what for months has been called a 'minority' now represents the real majority of 2025 members."
For candidate Scanu, "the primaries are held because the choice is open. Not to ratify decisions made elsewhere," she adds, polemically regarding her opponent. "The Democratic Party doesn't belong to anyone, but the candidate is chosen in the primaries. On March 1st, the voters decide, the community decides."
