An almost unknown disease. It is fibromyalgia, which was discussed yesterday in the first conference promoted in Sassari , at the Hotel Carlo Felice.
“We organized it,” says Daniel Contu, local patient representative for the Italian Fibromyalgia Association, “because we would like people to talk more about this disease that affects thousands of Sardinians.”
In Italy there are approximately 2 million people who suffer from chronic pain, myasthenia and serious dysfunctions.
“Unfortunately - says the national vice president of Aisf Giusy Fabio - at the moment fibromyalgia is not included in the minimum levels of assistance of the ministry despite the many plans based on the subject” . Fibromyalgia is burdened by the false reputation of “imaginary disease” , also due to the complexity of the diagnosis and the fact that, sometimes, it is confused with other pathologies such as depression.
“The problem,” concludes Contu, “is therefore finding competent doctors who can detect it.” You should contact a rheumatologist to verify the severity of the pathology. “ Often,” Daniel emphasizes, “it can lead to disability, making it impossible to work.”
At the moment there is no cure and the causes that lead to its onset are not even known. In the meantime, in Sassari the first steps are being taken to shed light on the problem thanks to the city council that in recent days unanimously voted an order of the day on the matter.
“They promised - concludes Daniel Contu - that they will promote some initiatives and this makes us very happy”.
