Musicality, stylistic versatility and technical mastery make him one of the best cellists in the world. The Latvian Mischa Maisky opens the 14th edition of the "Great Interpreters of Music" concert season tomorrow at the Teatro Verdi in Sassari (starting at 8.30pm), organized by the Cooperativa Teatro e/o Musica.

Guest of the major international festivals, Maisky collaborates with prestigious conductors and orchestras and considers himself a citizen of the world: «I play an Italian cello - he declared - with French and German bows, Austrian strings».

He is the only cellist to have studied with the greats Mstislav Rostropovich and Gregor Piatigorsky and began playing the instrument when he was still a child. «I am the third child – he continues – my older sister was a pianist and my brother had started as a violinist, for me it was logical to dedicate myself to a different instrument to be able to form a trio with them». For more than 40 years Mischa Maisky has been playing a precious Domenico Montagnana cello built in Venice in 1720 which he affectionately calls "bella Signora".

Accompanying Mischa Maisky on stage will be the "Teatro Verdi Chamber Orchestra" conducted by Guglielmo De Stasio. The evening's program features music by Mozart "Divertimento for strings", Tchaikovsky "Notturno" for cello and strings, Haydn "Concerto in C Major" for cello and strings.
