Pink October is an awareness and prevention campaign involving millions of women around the world and is dedicated to the fight against breast cancer .

In Italy, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, with 56,000 new cases diagnosed each year . Although this figure is slightly increasing, the percentage of cures has increased significantly thanks to medical progress and early diagnosis made possible by breast examinations and increasingly widespread mammographic screening programs.

During the month of breast cancer prevention, the AOU of Sassari has organised two days of free breast examinations which will take place on 21 and 23 October from 9am to 4pm in the Breast Unit clinics on the ground floor of the second white block (opposite staircase E), in Viale San Pietro 43 .

"For the occasion, the doctors and nurses of our facility will be available to perform free breast examinations for women of all age groups - said Alessandro Fancellu , director of the Breast Unit of the AOU of Sassari. - Early diagnosis of breast cancer is of crucial importance as the chances of recovery for the initial forms of breast cancer exceed 90% within specific diagnostic-therapeutic pathways in the context of the Breast Units".

"The Breast Unit of the AOU of Sassari was formally established in August 2023 and is the only one officially established in Northern Sardinia. It is included in Senonetwork, the network of Italian Breast Units that comply with European requirements for the treatment of breast diseases", underlined Professor Fancellu.

The University Hospital of Sassari has within it the professional skills and multidisciplinary structures required by Eusoma , the European scientific society that has drawn up the regulations and requirements that the Breast Units of individual nations must comply with.

"In recent years, the AOU has promoted the development of clinical activity in breast cancer, which has led to a progressive increase in patients operated on, and a significant reduction in waiting times for surgery, which have halved compared to last year. Currently, they are 20-30 days from the time of diagnosis," Professor Fancellu continued. "Surgical treatment will be implemented in the coming months with the application of robotic surgery, an innovative treatment that is indicated in particular clinical breast cancer situations."

Within the Breast Unit, a global care of patients takes place, who are welcomed and accompanied in all phases of the disease : diagnosis, surgical therapy, post-operative treatments, the rehabilitation phase, psychological assistance.

The facility on Viale San Pietro is open to women who want to have a preventive check-up, who have noticed a lump or any other change in their breast, those who have already been diagnosed with cancer or who want a second opinion, and also women with high hereditary-familial risk, who are offered a dedicated path, given the complexity of the diagnostic-therapeutic framework.
