Despite Spissu's absence, Sardinia will retain a representative in the Italian basketball team. Among the players called up by coach Luca Banchi for the training camp that will precede the third qualifying session for the 2027 World Cup is Sasha Grant, a winger from Dolianova who recently played in Serie A with Vanoli Cremona.
Last season, Grant contributed to the Lombardy team's survival by averaging 5.3 points in just over 19 minutes of play.
The call-up concerns the group that will prepare for the matches against Iceland and Lithuania, crucial for the qualification for the World Championship in Qatar. Before the official matches, the Azzurri will play two friendlies against Croatia and Slovenia.
Banchi's team will also include Olbia native Riccardo Fois, a technical assistant fresh from his experience in the NBA Finals with the New York Knicks.
On the youth front, there's some satisfaction for playmaker Stefano Trucchetti, fresh from his experience in Serie A2 with Vuelle Pesaro: the Sassari-born playmaker has been called up to the Under 20 national team, which will defend last year's European title in July.
