What does it really mean to adopt a dog from a shelter? What dynamics come into play, what are the needs of shelter animals, and what tools can help people make an informed and peaceful choice? These questions will be explored in the meeting "The Dog, From the Shelter to Home," scheduled for Thursday, December 18th at 4:30 PM in the Portico Room of the La Vetreria Cultural Center in Pirri.
The initiative was created with the aim of raising awareness among the public about the implications of adopting a dog from a shelter: a loving gesture, yet one that requires responsibility, awareness, and preparation. Behind every successful adoption lies a journey of care, expertise, and support: from the day-to-day work of the staff to the behavioral and health training of the animals, to accompanying the families through the first steps of their new life together.
The meeting will open with a presentation by Luisa Giua Marassi, Councilor for Urban Ecology, Environment, and Public Parks. Experts will follow: Roberto Chinarello, director of the Dog Hotel shelter, will explain the welcoming, assessment, and adoption preparation processes, as well as the roles of the professionals involved; Dr. Gianna Coppa, director of the veterinary service for the City of Cagliari, will review the excellent results of the "Distance Adoption" project for dogs at the city shelter; dog trainer Laura Martinelli will delve into the delicate process of a dog's arrival in a new family, where patience, support, and knowledge are essential to building a stable and positive bond; and Dr. Maria Grazia Cappai, professor of animal nutrition at the University of Sassari, will discuss the importance of proper nutrition for the well-being of an adopted dog.
The event is open to residents, those considering or already adopting, volunteers, and dog enthusiasts. It's an opportunity to learn firsthand about the journey that takes a dog from the shelter to home.
