Sardinian voters residing abroad and registered with the Aire (Registry of Italians residing abroad) can vote in the upcoming regional elections and are entitled to a contribution for participating in the vote. Contribution which - as established by the rules - is commensurate with the travel expenses actually incurred , up to a maximum of 250 euros for those coming from European countries and 1,000 euros for non-European countries.

The refund may be provided for specific categories :

registered in the Italian Registry and residing abroad;

residents abroad who have the registration procedure underway, certified by the consular office of the foreign country of origin;

permanent State employees serving abroad, who are notified pursuant to the Vienna Conventions on diplomatic relations and consular relations of 1961 and 1963 respectively (it will be necessary to certify this status with appropriate documentation);

Italian soldiers serving in NATO offices and structures located abroad (it will be necessary to certify this status with appropriate documentation).

However, voters who are abroad for study or for fixed-term work who cannot, by law, transfer their residence abroad are not entitled to the contribution.

THE DOCUMENTATION - The procedure, recalls the Municipality of Cagliari, requires the interested party to present himself in the Municipality in which he voted and hand over specific documentation to the official such as: electoral card or authorization in lieu thereof, endorsed at the electoral section and certifying the voting took place; identity card; return tickets and boarding passes showing that the trip was made within the following deadlines: arriving in the Sardinian municipality no earlier than two months before the voting date and leaving for the foreign country of residence within two months months following the voting. In the event that the outward or return journey involves the need for more than one vehicle, the stopover must not exceed 24 hours, under penalty of non-refundability.

The contribution will be paid to the interested party by the municipal administration only if the documentation presented is complete.

Furthermore, interested voters must personally request the contribution from the Municipality before returning to the foreign country and delegation is not permitted.

The documentation must be compiled by the voter (with possible support from the municipality to which he belongs) on the available models and delivered to the municipality to which he belongs.

ALLOWED EXPENSES - Expenses attributable to the voter for travel by plane, ship, train and extra-urban buses are included in the contribution, while expenses for motorway tolls, taxis, car rental (with or without driver), fuel mileage reimbursement and parking and Car passage by ship even if you own your own car.

The Cagliari municipal office for receiving AIRE applications, on the first floor of the municipal building in Piazza De Gasperi 2, will open to the public on the following days and times:

Friday 23 February 2024, from 3pm to 5.30pm;

Saturday 24 February 2024, from 9am to 1pm and from 3pm to 6pm;

Sunday 25 February 2024, from 8am to 1pm and from 2pm to 7pm;

Monday 26 February 2024, from 9am to 1pm and from 3pm to 6pm;

Tuesday 27 February 2024, from 9am to 1pm and from 3pm to 5.30pm;

Wednesday 28 February 2024, from 9am to 1pm and from 3pm to 5.30pm.

Voters can present the documentation on Friday 23 or Saturday 24 February 2024. In particular, if they have to leave again on Sunday 25 or Monday 26 February 2024, they will have to define the procedure (considering that the electoral card will be endorsed only after the vote on Sunday 25 February 2024) by promptly presenting the endorsed voter card in person and signing the application.
